Essential Questions

In my experience, both students and I often find editing and revision daunting but necessary tasks. However, in flash fiction, each word must be meticulously chosen to bear the story’s full weight. This challenge encourages students to think creatively and find innovative ways to tell stories. Working with shorter stories has not only honed my reading, review, and analytical skills as an educator but has also served as a rigorous exercise. Now, approaching student work of any length, I always ask myself:

  • Is every word necessary?
  • Does every sentence contribute meaningfully?
  • Can any ideas be expressed more concisely?

In this lesson, students will refine their writing skills by crafting succinct and captivating flash fiction pieces.
